Lecture: THE ALTALENA אלטלנה

By Prof. Udi Lebel. One of the most controversial and tragic events in modern Israel’s

history was the June 1948 attack on the Altalena ship, purchased by the “Irgun,” and

bringing to the war effort 800-900 volunteers and tons of weapons, ammunition and

vehicles. Prime Minister Ben-Gurion ordered that the cargo of ship be turned over the

newly-formed Israel Defense Forces. Sailing offshore between Kfar-Vitkin, Netanya

and Tel Aviv, the ship was repeatedly attacked from shore and from other IDF naval

ships. Mainly due to Menachem Begin’s understanding that the situation could spark

a civil war with Jew fighting Jew, the Irgun fighters were ordered to stop fighting. A

final accounting, pragmatically and morally, is long overdue. At the Menachem Begin

Heritage Center, 6 Nakhon St. opposite Liberty Bell Garden. Phone 02-5652026. Part

of the Tevat Pandora series. Admission free. In Hebrew.
