Post 535: Discovering Roberto Juan Rodriguez. Don’t forget to vote in Zionist elections. You must be a permanent resident of the USA and not voting in Israeli elections for the Knesset March 2,2020. Aliya meeting DC.

Roberto Juan Rodríguez born in Havana is a Cuban-American jazz musician who is known for fusion of Latin music and Jewish sacred music.

I had intended to put the links to sample El Danzon de Moises 2002. However only thru spocify or buy on line

  • It was purely by accident that I came upon the inspired music of Roberto Juan Rodriquez. One day I lifted the large garbage bin on our corner to throw out the garbage. Garbagemen come by and empty the bin with a lift. There is no private house collection, no individual pails. The bin is about the size of a modest bathroom with a lever below to step on which raises the cover.

I spotted a pile of a dozen CD’s on the ground in the building’s garden behind the bin. My guess is an outraged lady tossed her boyfriend out with his jazz collection. Just my theory.

Post 534: Saturday Afternoon with Vegemite and Marmite and Australian/Israelis. Unmarried, Happily Ever After – The New York Times. Promised Painting, Pushing Off the Angel of Death. Durable Power of Attorney session. Book Sale. Freezing cellulite? Meetings in D.C. about Historic Hagadah and Opportunity for Aliyah with Nefesh B’Nefesh. Massive prayer service at the Kotel for people ill with Carnovirus.

I spent a lovely Shabat afternoon meal with the Kahns, the sweetest family, from Sydney, in Israel 11 years. It was a Sydney crowd except for one couple from Monsey, N.Y. and me. The stage was 15 stories above Jerusalem and the day could not have been lovelier. There wasn’t the formal around the table introductions. Aussie are laid back.

Learned that Australia is almost as large as America. America is 9 plus million sq. kilometres and Australia is almost 8 million kilometres. Australia has a population of about 25 million.

Australia’s low population is due to low fertility rates, remoteness, and immigration. … The British Empire had to deport their own citizens to Australia to encourage immigration. Once Australia became a developed country, the Australian government made immigration extremely difficult.

Jews congregate in two areas of Sydney and Melbourbe along the coast. Also learned that the Australia’s center is largely inhabitable because there are no rivers or tributaries of rivers. The country is suffering the worst forest fires in their history. Young Jews are emigrating to Israel . The country provides the largest number of immigrants to Israel per capitathan any other country.

Vegemite was conspicuously on the table. A large container. One fellow was taking in gobs of the stuff.

What is Vegemite?

Vegemite

Vegemite is considered as much a part of Australia’s heritage as kangaroos and the Holden cars. It is actually an Australian obsession that has become a unique and loved symbol of the Australian nation.

A Vegemite sandwich to an Australian kid is the equivalent of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich to an American kid – but the taste is QUITE different!

Vegemite is one of several yeast extract spreads sold in Australia. It is made from leftover brewers’ yeast extract (a by-product of beer manufacture) and various vegetable and spice additives. It is very dark reddish-brown, almost black, in color, and one of the richest sources known of Vitamin B

Marmelite is similar.

The flavour of both spreads can be summed up in two words: ‘strong’ and ‘salty’. … And there is a slight difference in taste — Vegemite is more intensely gobsmacking than Marmite, which has a milder flavour and even a slight sweetness compared to its meatier Aussie cousin. NO Comment on the taste.

Australia’s low population is fertility rates, remoteness, and immigration. … The British Empire had to deport their own citizens to Australia to encourage immigration. Once Australia became a developed country, the Australian government made immigration extremely difficult.

Painting: Pushing away the Angel of Death. There is a purple figure kneeling, his head is about middle of the canvas in bleached white.Angel of Death is on the right with the reaper in left hand. The heads are about equal distance apart. Falling, the Present and Eternity

The head of the middle figure can be deciferred facing front or turned sideways. JUST TURN your head 45 degrees to the left and then look at the head and it will appear on the side. With both images you see three eyes instead of two.

The following discussion of Israel’s Durable power of Attorney will be presented. IT’S advisable to have one.

as an Alternative to Legal Guardianship

by Sara Leah Cracau, Elder Law Advocate & Mediator

May we always have the ability to remember but, just in case the memory thieves catch us, we can feel secure that we are prepared.

Under a recent Israeli law, a person can appoint others to make decisions for him on matters of his choice (health, financial, and/or personal matters) in case, G-d forbid, he becomes legally incapacitated (due to dementia or otherwise) and is unable to make decisions for himself. This generally obviates the need to apply to court for the appointment of a legal guardian.

Giant Book Sale

February 13, 2020

Dear Members,

You might have heard by now that AACI will be downsizing its area and staff considerably in the next two months. Included in this downsizing, our Library for the Visually Impaired must move from its current location.

We will be moving to the small room which used to house the children’s books, next to AACI-AMIT Library. We will need at least 2-3 weeks to accomplish our move, and the library will be closed during that time.

Our last day of regular operation will be

Thursday, February 20th. If you need

anything before then, please contact us immediately.

As a result of our having to move into a much smaller room, we must reduce our inventory considerably. On Tuesday

February 25th, 9:30-15:00 we will be having an enormous book and CD “bag sale”. Bring a bag, fill it with books and

/or CD’s and pay only 10 nis!! Come and tell all your friends to come and

fill their bags with our items at

tremendous savings! Please see flyer about the sale.

When we are up and running again, sometime in March, we will let everyone know.

We value your membership and look

forward to continue to serve with the same care as we have in the past.

Sincerely,

Staff of AACI-Cohen Library

If you plan to be in DC.

Hi. There is an upcoming talk Wed. March 18 at the Library of Congress by Marc Michael Epstein, an expert on medieval Haggadot, on women’s depictions in the Library’s Washington Haggadah,

Women are having fat cells frozen?Cryolipolysis Also known as “fat freezing,” this noninvasive treatment involves cooling of body fat to break down fat cells. Results are mixed, and the American Academy of Dermatology claims that while it may be effective for getting rid of small pockets of unwanted fat, the treatment cannot get rid of cellulite.Oct 25, 2017. Is everyone nuts? $2,000 to $4,000 per session???

Post 533: Cooking is so therapeutic because It’s about the abundance we have and can share. Painting in progress. My experience as the widow guest in her 3rd stage of bloom. (Reference to Jane Austin’s description in Persuasion of Elizabeth Elliot in her first bloom losing out to suitors who chose rich women of inferior birth to her). Abraham Lincoln and the Bible

This week’s parsha starts with “Enochi”. I am the G-d that took you out of Egypt”. What is the connection? The first commandment is a statement. Some explain it as an utterance; a d’boor. Still? Puzzling to use an Egyptian word.

Don’t forget, I G-d am the source of all beneficence in your life. There is nothing in this world except my essence. Take that to heart. Remember where you came from, a rotten place called Egypt. If not for Me you’d still be there. Just like I was for you then, I am for you now, today. YOU WERE in exile and now you are free to serve Me. You must serve me with joy. Life is for living. Grieving is turning away from my goodness and putting yourself in exile, detached from Me. To grieve is to worship alien gods .

I’ve got all these vegetables. Turned the CD up high .

Got into a comfortable chair with necessary tools.

  • Gave myself an hour and at the end have a bowl of pesto, a tray of cumin with carrots and one of cauliflower, a bowl of gazpacho, and chocolate poached pears.

Theses basics combined with baked mackeral/ or herring or beans, millet and soup will be my meals for the week. There are still half the vegetables left from the original counter!

The photo above contains tables made from olive wood. The surface includes amber where the wood has imperfections. Very lovely. On sale. Support local .art

Mushrooms, eggplant, yellow, green and acorn squash will be grilled tomorrow on large George Foreman grill. And at the same time will try to finish a painting.

Of course this looks like a bunch of goblygook. I’ll BEH come back with the finished one.

The widowed guests. Every Shabat table has a group of single never married, divorced and widowed women huddled around the hostess at one end of a 14 guest table.

Men are only 5 of the crowd. Statistically impossible to sit next to a man. Heaven forbid a couple should be separated.

To quote Thomas Hardy:

A strong woman who recklessly throws away her strength, she is worse than a weak woman who has never had any strength to throw away.

Yes, the hosts are a cute couple from Waco Texas and each person around the table told their Alliah story. The guests were from Colorado, Texas, Singapore, Pennsylvania, Finland, and Britain.

For the most part the wife spoke of their family’s journey, often a circuitous ones.

A single woman quoted from her prior weeks’ class. Her class lead by Suzzi Schneider concludedy’s today’s social problems as in earlier times are due to corruption of the Judiciary. Larry was often asked, “Why don’t you practise law or consult here?” He’d reply, ” אין צדק ואין דין which means “No justice and no law”. Israel has no constitution. Precedents are from British and Turkish periods.

On my way home today with a broken wagon. Stopped in a fabric store . An old sewing machine is the doorstop.

Might be able to find the hardware to fix it. Temporary solution attached a gummy.

Bought pillowcase fabric to match sheets. I know sewers who have cartons of fabric. Buying beautiful fabric can be an obsession. No, I have odd kidney shaped pillows and have designed cases to match.

My apartment is now listed with Air B and B. More about that at another time. Contact me if you are interested because it’s a better deal booking direct.

The second photo shows a sample fabric all of 100% cotton Batik. These fabrics are imported from the USA for the creative Israeli quilters who stream to Jerusalem for batik fabric.

I got a ticket from a friend to a lecture described below given at Beit Avi Chai a block away.

Rabbi Dr Meir Soloveitchik spoke on the ideals, concepts, and qualities of Lincoln’s leadership he learned from Biblical personalities.

We all know Abraham Lincoln led the United States through the American Civil War, its bloodiest war and perhaps its greatest moral, constitutional and political crises.

Rabbi Dr Meir Soloveitchik drew several parallels. The battle of Gettysburg was fought July 1-July 3rd 1863.

Sabato Morais served as minister at Mikveh Israel in Phildephia for forty-six years from 1851 to 1897. He was an opponent of slavery prior to the Civil War

When he gave his July 4th sermon he did not know the outcome of the battle of Gettysburg.

Marc Saperstein has an interesting article at the Huffington Post titled ‘Four Score and Seven Years Ago’: A Jewish Connection regarding a sermon delivered by R. Sabato Morais on July 4, 1863, which also fell out on the 17th of Tammuz.

July 4, 1863 was a Saturday, and Rabbi Sabato Morais, a Sephardi immigrant from Italy serving as religious leader of Philadelphia’s Mikveh Israel Congregation, delivered his Sabbath morning sermon. His sermon contains a phrase that might well have influenced the most celebrated speech in American history.

…Needless to say, some three months later, for the dedication of the Gettysburg cemetery, Abraham Lincoln elevated the level of his discourse from “eighty odd years” to “four score and seven years, our fathers brought forth to this continent,” possibly borrowing from the published text by the Philadelphia Sephardic preacher who, without knowing it, may have made a lasting contribution to American rhetorical history.

Rabbi Soloveitchik emphasised that Lincoln didn’t use King James biblical language. However, Sabato Morais did learn English studying the King James Bible. The word :”score” is used there repeatedly.

Habaytak Besayf means “I loved you in the summer”.This song tells the story of a girl waiting for her love, fleeting like the summer, but who never comes . That’s me.

Here’s the transliteration with English afterwards, followed by a link to the song. Every Israeli male I spoke with is ape crazy about the Fairuz song. Pronounced Firuz.

Habaytak Bisayf (I Love You in Summer)

In the cold days, in the days of winter

When the sidewalk has become a lake and the street full of water

This girl has come from her old house to await him.

He told her to wait but he has gone away

And he forgot about her and she goes away in winter.

I loved you in the summer, I loved you in the winter

I waited for you in the summer, I waited for you in the winter

Your eyes are summer, My eyes are winter

My love full is beyond summer and beyond winter

The stranger passed by and gave me a message

My lover had written with his tears

I opened the message whose letters are lost

And days passed, years made us strangers

While winter had erased the letters of the message

I loved you in the summer, I loved you in the winter

I waited for you in the summer, I waited for you in the winter

Your eyes are summer, My eyes are winter

My love full is beyond summer and beyond winter.

Post 530: Printer problem continued Trip North to view. The Art and Soul of Peace Through Humor Children’s Art Exhibition ,Tu B’Schvat, Monday, February 10 at Yemin Orde in the Carmel Mountains.

Going out to exercise , now 36 degrees. The claim that the ideal temperature for peak performance hovering between 36 and 52 degrees.Too cold.

Maybe not for me. Printer problem. Who will correct? Please examine the cartridge number in the machine above and the actual cartridge. Levy sold me the wrong cartridge. He said you can put a black in a yellow but Cannon says if you do you can kiss your printer goodbye. Time to confront Levy who has not been picking up phone.

Levy was happy to

to share his cell phone number. And gladly acknowledged his error. To get the Cannon printer to come to life 4 cartridges needed changing, 3 color and large black. Now have a spare black. Larry used to call me indomitable. Now learned a new skill.

You will also be part of a tree planting at the Eco Farm situated exactly where the Carmel Forest Fire was a few years ago and which destroyed a big part of Yemin Orde…which has since been rebuil

Festival of the Trees celebrates the sap awakening. A dinner tonight and one on the bus to Yemin Orde.

Bus leaves at 11:30. Another bunch of sweets on the trip. Why does every Jewish holiday revolve around food?

The charming stone path in the photo above the fruit and hobbit house is around the corner from my apartment building.

Fattal to open sixth hotel in Jerusalem | ITN – Israel Travel News , think this is the projected hotel.

If you use the link there will be an architect’s rendering. The right side is nondescript and the left side across the street from the property looks like Gan Rehavia. Not sure. The article says 13 but the number is 18 Shmuel Ha Nagid.

https://itn.co.il/news/hotels/fattal-to-open-sixth-hotel-in-jerusalem/

I listened to Larry and am staying away from the public discussions slated for Wednesday.

My building doesn’t border the property. These meetings are held around noon when only old codgers will attend. My co volunteer manager plans to attend. There will be droves from the Reform Synagogue and the Baptist house who are joining hands in protest over a 72 room boutique hotel.

Post 529: Judy rescues infant and cannon printer experience. What I learned on Shabat: My intellectual self-fulfillment and emotional development are inseparable from my devotion to my family.

These two threads have much in common. How often have I thrown up my hands and said, “This kid is just too.much! Continuing story: Judy in Jackson Hole and cannon printer doldrums. Judy took control of the situation and walked the floor singing and warming the infant and herself at the same time. Wyomians start to toughen their kids by chilling them to near death. Pretty awesome.

MY cannon printer was a little harder to figure out. Judy and Liat, originally from Toronto came to my side after the macrobiotic diner on Thursday night to attempt to open the printer. I’ve concluded that anyone living where winter temperatures range around 0, engages with his surroundings actively. Liat was familiar with handling cartridges and when we heard a click we thought the problem was solved. Not so fast.

I got real good at opening the machine and taking out the new cartridge and putting it back. Still kept getting nasty messages. Back on line and instructions said press that innocuous looking button and then you’ll block the nasty messages. Still no luck. Time to call Levy the salesman. “Oh Farkash, a good week.”

“Levy, the cartridge is in, and the printer

doesn’t work”.

“SO, you need to also change the second black cartridge. You need also the 580”.

This is life in Israel. No extra medicine. It’s a rerun of “Zenna”, rationing. G-d forbid. In these days of inventory control how do offices keep operating when ink cartridges are scarce? Are all companies paper free theses days? Antibiotics for 8 not 10 days if you are decently healthy. Levy was looking out for me, not to cost me more. If the two cartridges work side by side then I’d imagine both get changed simultaneously? The second cartridge is on order and Levy volunteered to do the messy part of openning the full ink container. AT 3 PM to arrive.

WHAT is the takeaway? Just like Yosef told his sons, don’t bury me in Egypt. Take me with you to our land. This was a request. Moshe many generations later fulfilled that promise. DON’T be afraid to ASK if you need help. Maybe the team is just you and one other person. Or it could be searching out your friends and returning with the utmost patience. Because all you can do is try. UPON examining the photo of the cartridges I don’t think this second cartridge will do the trick. I think there may be need to change a third. We’ll see. Liat pulled the yellow one and replaced with a black cartridge. It was blinking and the new black cartridge stopped the blinking. I’ll show the photo to Levy. At the minimum he’ll thank me for my patience 100 times over. His store is a big mess and he sits behind a wall. Guess that’s up to protect him from disgruntle customers whose printers are beached.

Explore the following home treatments to see if any work for you and your runny nose.

  1. Drink plenty of fluids. Drinking fluids and staying hydrated when dealing with a runny nose can be helpful if you also have symptoms of nasal congestion. …
  2. Hot teas. …
  3. Facial steam. …
  4. Hot shower. …
  5. Neti pot. …
  6. Eating spicy foods. …
  7. Capsaicin.

My superficial analysis. Why does one get a runny nose? The congestion and virus behind the nose has no place to get released. I’ve found dousing with salt water spray from the pharmacy relieves the congestion and allows the body to combat the cold. You start to see thicker mucous.

The above printer needs a new cartridge, which I purchased. One must go into the bowels of the printer to extract the old cartridge. The salesman said that he’d do the job if I brought him the printer. It weighs about 20 lbs. The Utube proclaimed, “The job is easy.” However, my printer and the one on the Utube have their ink cassettes in different places. The printer is on my table in front of the sofa. This is like the gun in the first act of a Checkov play. MY 7 guests arrived for a Pot Luck macrobiotic diner. They would also interact with my printer.

First a bit about the Macrolovers of Jerusalem. The women are intent on doing anything and everything necessary to live to be centenarians. Some have had cancer. They try to only eat organically grown vegetables etc. I know the members only thru the potluck dinners we share on an occasional basis. I offered to host because it’s easier for me to do that than to get onto a bus after a meal and schlep home. My dish of pickled herring met with medium approval at the beginning when I listed as my contribution. The recipe called for white vinegar.

They don’t use white vinegar because it’s ascedic and they want to be “in balance”. I don’t hold by the organic requirements. I think peeling vegetables and some fruits is adequate. If one exercises and sweats during the workout the “toxins” are eliminated. I described my technique for pickling the fish, “Go to Cohens in the shuk and get herring from the barrel, slice it open, remove the innards and bones. Slice. LAYER in a jar with organic onions, bay leaf and organic lemon. Leave a few days. IT PASSED scrutiny.”

A new member to the group, Judy has just returned to Israel after a stay in the USA for 8 years in Jackson Hole Wyoming. As a little girl I kept a scrap book of places that I wanted to visit.

JACKSON HOLE was one. I remember the cowboy. Today it is -13F in Jackson Hole. Judy admitted few Jews leave the metropolis of Jackson Hole to where she lived one hour away. Yes, she met many people who had never met a Jew.

Her work was taking care of babies of professional new mothers. The dads were working at home. She told a story of how she literally rescued a baby from hydrotherma, whose mom was a pediatrician.

Judy came on the scene an quickly observed a small infant of 3 months resembling a newborn in weight.

Rest of the baby/printer story in my next post.

Post 527: Announcement Jerusalem Botanical Gardens Event; My first Screenplay Meeting with May. May is a student director. Great falafel recipe.

Dear Friends,

I’m happy to be sending you the February Garden Club program.

Tomorrow, we will be celebrating Tu B’Shvat at the home of our member Louis Shuster in Givat Zeev (not to be confused with Pisgat Zeev) is Beerot 23. There is parking on the street.

If anyone needs a ride please let me know.

For those who wish to travel by bus, it`s about 20 minutes from the Central Bus Station. Busses 131,132 or 133 from front of Binyonei Hauma. Get off at Kiryat Yearim-Almon(131,132) or Almon-Ha-Etrog (133). Then walk one short block on Almon to Beerot, turn right and go about 100 meters to number 23 on the left side of the street.

Beerot is rather steep downhill, so be careful.

Looking forward

May’s story is of a female soldier after discharge from the army. It starts off with the saddest element. A young woman is homeless, sitting on a bench with a heavy backpack on her back. She calls her mother and waits for an invitation to come home and there is none. The story is the journey after the army for many who have no home to go back to. She rides the rails 3 hours going and 3 hours back sleeping each way from Beersheva to Nahariya. It is not so cheap. Each way is 60 sheckels. That’s about $15.00.

She doesn’t have money for the trip back. She gets into a fight with the conductor. My story and hers have a few similar elements. But hers is a reflection of today’s Israeli youth, trying to get a foothold while mine is a fairytale. I appreciate the opportunity May gave me to witness her vision.

I’ve been running away from a cold. It started with a runny nose on Sunday. I get colds when I consume sugar. Basically my immune system goes a bit wacky. When I consume very small amounts of sugar .

Looks like the cold has run its course.

1. Drank 8 glasses of fluid today.

2. Slept for 2 hours in the afternoon.

3. BROKE exercise into 2 parts, morning and evening.

Jerusalem night air is cool and moist. Remember the cool mist vaporizers? Jumped rope and immediately my head felt clear, nostrils opened up no longer stuffy. Afterwards at home opened a few windows to let that wonderful vapor flow.

Falafel

Evan Sung for The New York Times

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 ¾ cups dried chickpeas or 1 cup dried chickpeas plus 3/4 cup dried split fava beans
  • 2 cloves garlic, lightly crushed
  • ½ onion, quartered
  • 1 teaspoon ground coriander
  • 1 tablespoon ground cumin
  • Scant teaspoon cayenne, or to taste; or mild chile powder to taste
  • ½ cup chopped fresh parsley or cilantro leaves
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, or to taste
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice, or more to taste
  • Neutral oil, like grapeseed or canola, for deep-frying

Add to Your Grocery List

PREPARATION

  1. Put beans in a large bowl and cover with water by 3 to 4 inches — they will triple in volume as they soak. Soak for 24 hours, checking once or twice to see if you need to add water to keep the beans covered.
  2. Drain beans well and transfer to a food processor with all the remaining ingredients except the oil; pulse until minced but not puréed; add water tablespoon by tablespoon if necessary to allow the machine to do its work, but keep the mixture as dry as possible. (Too much water and your falafel will fall apart. If that happens, add more ground beans.) Taste and adjust seasoning, adding more salt, pepper, cayenne or a little more lemon juice as needed.
  3. Put at least 2 to 3 inches of oil (more is better) in a large deep saucepan (the narrower the pan, the less oil you need; but the more oil you use, the more you can cook at one time). Turn heat to medium high and heat oil to about 350 (a pinch of batter will sizzle immediately; a piece of falafel will sink halfway to the bottom, then rise).
  4. Scoop out heaping tablespoons of the mixture and shape it into balls or small patties. Fry in batches, without crowding, until nicely browned, turning as necessary; total cooking time per batch will be less than 5 minutes. Serve hot or at room temperature.

Post 526: detox soup

Just had a few days of way too many meals. Like to get the extra kilo off right away. My posts are loaded with Jewish/Rabbi Nachman of Breslov’s teachings.

Met with community center social worker with possible place for a gallery. Will be an adventure.

Eve Persak’s Evergreen Soup

Serves 1

  • 1 ½ cup chicken bone broth (“I also use plain filtered water when I’m lazy or don’t have any stock on hand”)

  • 1 cup chopped mixed vegetables, such as broccoli, spinach, kale and cauliflower (the latter “gives a little bit of plant-based creaminess”)

  • Pinch of fresh parsley and basil (“for the cleansing, reparative benefits”)

  • ½ tablespoon white miso paste

  • ¼ to ½ avocado, sliced

  • 1 tablespoon raw pumpkin seeds

  • Pinch of freshly grated raw turmeric

1. In a small pot, add stock, vegetables, parsley and basil and a pinch of salt, and bring to a boil. Reduce heat, cover and simmer until vegetables are soft but still vibrant in color (about five to seven)

2. In a small bowl, combine miso with ¼ cup hot water and stir until the miso is fully dissolved.

3. Once the soup is cooked, remove from heat, stir in the dissolved miso and let cool slightly.

4. Transfer to a blender or food processor and blend to a fine purée.

5. Garnish with avocado, pumpkin seeds and turmeric.

This concoction takes time. I just throw greens into the food processor. Then suppliment with Protein, herring, tempeh, beans. Do that for two days.

Street is alive in the morning, garbage trucks and workers cleaning. WOMEN Ambulance corps greeting the first patient who BTW climbed into the back of the ambulance with no assistance.

Last night the decks were partially cleared with our former health care worker in my employ. He paid back a good share of what he owes me and assured me he’d pay the rest in 10 days. He is trustworthy so am not worried.

Interestingly, when Joey began helping Eliezer in July, I was a bit confused. Of course Eliezer had it right. Who was the employer? Eliezer!

Actually, Joey made things go smoothly without conflict. He was such a blessing. He did the day’s chores for Larry and I. When I went out I was sure to leave meal options and he appreciated that.

At Yehudis’ Class: Spiritual Life, beginnings and metabolism. How did the stages enfold? Describe homeostasis, balance of fire etc. FUNDAMENTALLY: THE BODY CONTAINS THE ELEMENTS IN Balance. There are rises and falls. Essential elements:

Fire, air, water and earth were the paths through which the sages talked about parts of man. Sorry the writing is not clear.

All illness derives from a state of conflict , drives not getting along. Air is an example a substance composed of defined elements. 4 elements of the body are discussed by Greek physician Hippocrates (ca. 460 BCE–370 BCE) who is often credited with developing the theory of the four humors—blood, yellow bile, black bile, and phlegm—and their influence on the body and its emotions.

Aish is fire, anger. Air is pride. Not called wind for nothing. Water is מיים . Oxygen exists with another Oxygen and hydrogen. They move, want more of everything, food , pleasure, more and more.

Earth is humility, rooted in its positive state. Negative state lethargy.

Asuta is medicine. Holy conflict in the name of Hashem is healing.

There is no healing without conflict. This conflict is for the purpose of clarification, to maintain more areas of commonality and improve knowledge (das). Then peace flows. There’s a firm basis only if one can rise above the elements in conflict. D’at is to be under the banner of Hashem’s will which is activated faith. Start from the ground up. Why can’t people heal? Rabbi Nachman died at 48 after losing his wife and child. Tefilah, refuah, connecting to our Avos sometimes doesn’t help. All healing is dependent on אמובה Belief. Most physical remedies arise from elements in the ground. We forget relying on Western medicine. Emunah reaches up to d’as. Healing for the ill one is internal and part if 9 sfiros. What are the sfiros? To be disgust next.
